Think we’re all serious and full of insightful posts? Of course we are. We’re also a bit silly and prone to long debates behind the scenes. Tonight, the curtain is being pulled back, and you get to see the Gear Diary Team debate:
Windows/Windows Mobile-Are They Ever On Time or Worth Waiting For?
It all started over a WordPress bug:
Michael Anderson: The WiMo 7 article says ‘missed schedule’
Doug Moran: Quell surprise; Microsoft missed a deadline! I mean this seriously: have they ever shipped an OS on time?
Carly Z in reply to Doug Moran: windows 7 was on time wasn’t it?
Amy Zunk: I just wanted to add my 2 cents since I wasn’t online much this week. Yes, MS has a BAD habit of dropping deadlines. They weren’t always like this. Remember the Win95 launch? Windows 7 is on time…and a decent OS for netbooks. I really like it there. Combine it with Intel’s new App Up store and netbooks really rock. Windows 7 as a desktop OS replacement? Not really sure there. I haven’t used it that much there. I am too used to Windows XP. WinMo 6.5 and 7? Yeah..major late. Are people still using WinMo phones anymore? Not as much as in previous years. Why? Its out of date and not as easy as say an iPhone, or even Android.
Michael Anderson in reply to Carly Z: I think it was – they were saying 3 years after Vista, and that is what they delivered. Regardless of anything, they deserve kudos for Win7
Doug Moran: Good question. The beta was certainly delayed.
Francis Scardino in reply to Michael Anderson: Agreed. I am a fan of MS, not always of the OS but I think 7 was directly on schedule the whole time. people tell me that they are happy they pushed it out so fast. I just tell them it was the plan the whole time. Either way, 7 is fantastic.
Doug Moran: I think they had to, since Vista was so, um, inadequate.
Christopher Gavula in reply to Doug Moran: And 7 wasn’t exactly a new OS – it was just a Vista cleanup
Michael Anderson in reply to Christopher Gavula: But since so many folks jumped from XP to W7 it feels quite new
Francis Scardino in reply to Christopher Gavula: I should have stayed with windows ME!
Michael Anderson in reply to Francis Scardino: Ugh … WinME was the most useless OS release ever … I had been on Win NT 4 and moved to Win 2000 and had a laptop that came with WinME … couldn’t get rid of it fast enough!
Carly Z in reply to Francis Scardino: oh dear god that was a bad os.
Doug Moran: I don’t know of a single enterprise company that moved to Vista. Lots of them waited for Windows 7. (I’ve seen plenty of post-XP applications, but nobody seemed to want to install Vista.) Sami and I had ME for a while and yeah, that one was really, really bad.
Francis Scardino in reply to Doug Moran: That’s funny. Unfortunately the biggest company of all just bought the largest VLK for Vista. You guessed, the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. hahahahahahah
Doug Moran: Well, you know what they say, Francis. “There’s three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the [Navy | Air Force | Army | Marine] way!”
